Joel Watkins Shaffer

Joel Shaffer is a registered patent attorney with extensive experience in patent preparation and prosecution, built on fifteen years of electrical engineering work in the semiconductor industry. She has represented clients ranging from multinational Fortune 500 companies to individual inventors, preparing and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications across computer, electrical, and mechanical technologies, including digital and wireless communications, beamforming, networking, neural networks and machine learning, imaging, electromagnetic systems, multiprocessor and embedded systems, optical systems, semiconductor packaging and processing, and additive manufacturing. She also has patent licensing experience, drafting and reviewing non-disclosure agreements and joint development agreements for a multinational company.

Before law school, Joel worked as a design and applications engineer at two multinational semiconductor companies, focusing on memory devices and microcontroller applications. She represented her employers in JEDEC standard-setting meetings on memory and microchip interface standards. She also used logic verification tools to simulate and demonstrate the performance of embedded DRAM designs and worked in the Cadence design environment.
